SUNY Canton to Award Scholarships, Prizes at Engineering Open House

CANTON, NY (02/09/2017) (readMedia)-- SUNY Canton invites the community to explore the fun side of technology at the annual Engineers Week Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 28 in Nevaldine Hall.

Children in grades K-12 and their families are invited to take a tour, meet with faculty and participate in 20 exciting hands-on demonstrations that offer a unique glimpse into the college's engineering technology programs. Guests will be able to experiment with lasers, learn about 3-D software, test out a thermal camera and more.

This is the third year the college has hosted the event, which attracts students from all over the North Country.

"The public's interest in the Open House has grown tremendously within the past two years," said Michael Newtown, dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. "Last year more than 200 students attended, and we anticipate being able to showcase our career-focused degrees to even more visitors this year."

Newtown added the event serves to introduce younger students to STEM fields and helps them discover their technical ability and creativity.

This year's theme is "Launch Your Future," and the evening's highlight will be a student competition where teams of two will face off to build the fastest zip-line racer. Contestants of the winning team in the 9th to 12th grade group will each receive a $1,300 SUNY Canton scholarship. The second-place team will each win a $500 SUNY Canton scholarship, and the third-place team will be awarded $100 gift cards.

First-, second- and third-place prizes in the 3rd to 8th grade category include Lego Mindstorms kits, remote-control cars and model rocket kits.

In addition to the Open House, a career fair and alumni panel will be held for current SUNY Canton students who are looking to connect with employers and graduates. All events are being held to celebrate National Engineers Week, which is dedicated to increasing understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers.

The event is sponsored by Corning Incorporated Foundation and is free and open to the public. To register or learn more about the competition, visit www.canton.edu/engineers or contact SUNY Canton's Career Services Office at (315) 386-7119.
