SUNY Canton to Host Nursing Laboratory Open House

CANTON, NY (03/02/2017) (readMedia)-- SUNY Canton invites the community to an open house event which will showcase a new high-tech simulation nursing laboratory.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 6, in Wicks Hall, Room 105. Faculty and students will be on hand to demonstrate the lab's capabilities and explain how the equipment assists with problem solving and assessment.

"Our teaching laboratory replicates a hospital's intensive care unit, complete with state-of-the-art mannequins which simulate symptoms, diseases and conditions that nurses are likely to see in a real-care setting," said Nursing Professor and Program Director Debra M. Backus, Ph.D. "These simulations increase students critical thinking, communication and decision making skills."

Funding for the laboratory was provided in part by a state grant secured by Sen. Patty A. Ritchie.

"We're grateful for Sen. Ritchie's continued support of SUNY Canton and, specifically, our nursing programs," said Vice President for Advancement Anne M. Sibley.

SUNY Canton currently offers three nursing degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing and a Practical Nursing certificate program.

To RSVP for the event, contact Beth Gravlin at irvine10@canton.edu or call 386-7669.
