CORTLAND, NY (11/20/2013)(readMedia)-- Students in a SUNY Cortland communication studies course aimed at social change will recognize National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week with a "Fill the Bowl" project Thursday, Nov. 21.
The project involves collecting spare change, then passing it in bowls down West Court Street. The effort seeks to demonstrate hunger issues faced in Cortland, where 17.7 percent of the community lives below the poverty line.
Classmates in the "Communication and Social Change" course taught by Professor Caroline Kaltefleiter are inviting fellow students as well as College employees and community members to line the sidewalk with them. They plan to meet outside Miller Building at 11:30 a.m. and pass yellow bowls of the collected funds from noon to 1 p.m.
The money, along with non-perishable food items, will be collected at the Blue Frog Café and donated to Loaves and Fishes, the local food pantry located at 13 Court St.
Throughout the week, students in the course have collected spare change in 100 yellow bowls on campus. Nearly $500 already has been raised and participants are invited to bring monetary donations and canned goods to the Thursday event.
