SUNY Delhi Faculty and Staff Honored with Chancellor's Award
DELHI, NY (04/27/2011)(readMedia)-- Four faculty and staff members at SUNY Delhi have been named recipients of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence, the State University's most prestigious honor. Michael Miller, professor of computer aided drafting and design, Peter Campbell, technology instructor, Shawn P. Brislin, manager of client support services, and Anna Reed, library clerk 3, will be presented their awards at the college's Employee Appreciation Ceremony May 23, 2011.
"These are exceptional individuals whose dedication makes SUNY Delhi a great place for students, faculty and staff to learn and work," said SUNY Delhi President Candace S. Vancko.
Michael Miller, professor of computer aided drafting and design, will receive the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. During his 13-year career at Delhi, Professor Miller has tirelessly demonstrated his commitment to improving and enhancing educational opportunities for students. He is responsible for the accreditation of all three Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) offerings at SUNY Delhi through the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) He also serves as co-advisor to the student ADDA chapter. Professor Miller has developed a number of courses for Delhi's CADD program, ranging from foundation courses to specialized engineering design courses.
In 2010, CADD students achieved a milestone with a 100 percent pass rate on the national drafting exam-the national average is 75 percent. Professor Miller's efforts in taking a real-world, practical approach to teaching resulted in the college acquiring a Stratasys rapid prototyping machine. This machine offers CADD students the benefit of working with a state-of-the-art 3-D printer.
Professor Miller is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Design Drafting Association. He received SUNY Delhi's Academic Advisor of the Year Award for 2007 and an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) in 2008.
Peter Campbell, technology instructor, who will be recognized with the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, has been engaged in numerous community service activities since first joining the faculty in 1999. Using his expertise, he serves as a proctor for the ESCO Institute and has provided training and testing of high pressure refrigerants. Campbell has worked on a number of projects alongside students while volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. He is a regular participant in Delaware County's Relay for Life, and has presented on his volunteer experience at the Conference on Volunteerism at SUNY Oneonta.
Campbell's exemplary service activities directly benefit students. He serves as a tutor at the Resnick Learning Center and was recognized with the Volunteer Faculty Tutor Award in 2008. He has worked with groups of students at the local 4-H camp, Allen Residential Center, the Delaware and Ulster Railroad, the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, and area churches for Community Service Day. Campbell regularly serves as a judge for the VICA/Skills USA competitions hosted by the college. In 2006, he was recognized with a "Student Life Leadership Award" for assisting with numerous orientation weekends and move-in days for students.
Shawn Brislin, manager of client support services, will receive the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. During the past 13 years, he has led a number of important college initiatives. Brislin helped address the campus's increasing demand for technical support and support hours. He assisted with research that helped lead to the implementation of thin clients and other technology, which have reduced costs and enabled faculty and staff to work remotely. Brislin also led the restructuring of the college's academic computing labs.
Brislin assists the campus with electronic communication, such as video capture, webcasting and webinars, enabling faculty and staff to connect with the world. He has ensured that high profile events, such the 2-3-98 Conference, the Chancellor's Town Hall meeting, and the NJCAA national championships in basketball and track and field are supported with up-to-date technology.
Brislin's service to the college includes assisting with two Middle States self studies and serving on the Student Conduct Council, the Employee Health and Safety Committee, the Voice/Video/Data Advisory Committee, the Intercollegiate Athletic Review Board, College Senate and a number of search committees. He is an active member of the SUNY Educational Technology Officers Association, SUNY Computer Officers Association and EDUCAUSE.
Anna Reed, library clerk 3, will receive the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Classified Service. Reed is fully committed to providing the highest quality library services to students, faculty and staff. She has played a key role in the planning and development of the Resnick Library for the past 25 years and has authored four successful library automation grants. Under her guidance, student employees of the library are trained to provide customer service and assist staff in technical service areas of the library.
Reed devotes considerable time to professional development by attending webinars, workshops, and regional and state-wide conferences. Her knowledge in information technology has allowed the library to streamline procedures. She represents Delhi on SUNY-wide and regional groups implementing new library management and resource sharing systems.
Reed has served as chair of the campus Employee Assistance Program Committee since 1992. As a CSEA leader, she served as grievance chair from 2002-2009 and now serves on the executive board as secretary. Reed has served on working groups for two Middle States self studies and numerous search committees. Beyond the campus, she is a member and conference volunteer for the New York State Library Assistants' Association and is an active participant in the SUNY Aleph User Group.
