SUNY Delhi Inducts Athletic Hall of Fame Class

DELHI, NY (06/12/2012)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi inducted four members into its Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday, June 2, at 3 p.m. in the Clark Field House as part of the college's "Alumni Weekend" celebration. Inductees included: Stephen Hutchinson '70, basketball; Bonnie Busch-Finn '90, softball; Jonathan Fagan '04, track and field; and Vernon Gorgrant '05, golf.
Stephen "Hutch" Hutchinson graduated from SUNY Delhi as the career scoring leader in basketball with 1,088 points. Hutchinson won 70 percent of his games and had a career scoring average of 26 points per game, ranking in the top 10 nationally. Renowned for his long shots, Hutchinson made the Region III First Team two years consecutively and was the single-season and career-scoring record holder in the New York State Junior College Conference. Hailing from Schenevus, Hutchinson served four years in the U.S. Air Force prior to attending Delhi and earning an A.A.S. in Business Administration. He transferred to Rochester Institute of Technology where he started as a guard for the RIT Tigers and earned a bachelor's degree in 1972.
Bonnie Busch-Finn was named Most Valuable Player and earned All-Region honors both years she pitched for the SUNY Delhi women's softball team, 1988-1990. As a freshman from Ramapo High School, Busch-Finn set a high bar pitching 101 innings, earning 26 runs, and holding a run average of 1.8 and 59 strikeouts her first year at Delhi. Overall, her career ERA at Delhi was 1.4 and her batting average was .434. Her pitching speed was certified at 72 mph. Busch-Finn went on to play for SUNY Oneonta and was inducted into the Red Dragons Hall of Fame in 2000. Cited as one of the top softball players of all-time at Oneonta, she led her team to the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Championship in 1992 and was named ECAC Player of the Year. Busch-Finn was a two-time All-SUNYAC player, an All-State player and ranked in the top 10 nationally for walks per game, victories, winning percentage and complete games. Busch-Finn still holds her place today among Delhi and Oneonta's all-time leaders in pitching.
Jonathan Fagan of Milford, Mass. is a four-time NJCAA All-American and two-time NJCAA Division III national champion in the decathlon. Fagan holds the championship meet record for that event, as well as SUNY Delhi records for 60 hurdles, long jump, pentathlon and sprint medley. Fagan's success at Delhi earned him an athletics scholarship to McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., where he graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees. Fagan coached at McNeese for two years and is currently a physical education teacher at a Middle School in Louisiana where he coaches football and track and field.
Vernon Gorgrant was named 2005 SUNY Delhi Athlete of the Year after a phenomenal performance at the NAIA Region IX and X championships where his three-round total of five under par broke the tournament record. A Vestal native, he had an outstanding four-year college career that included two Delhi Coaches' Awards and status as the only four-year institution qualifier in Delhi's history. Gorgrant was a three-time Region X champion and a two-time individual medalist. His scoring average of 76.16 was among the best in the nation. In his freshman year, Gorgrant had a hole-in-one at the Keystone Ryder Cup Invitational, the first and only in the competition's history. Gorgrant turned professional upon graduation, accepting a position at the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club in Ocean City, Md.
