SUNY Delhi Ranks among Top Associated Schools of Construction in Northeast Region Competition

DELHI, NY (12/07/2013)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi ranked in the top three construction management colleges and universities in the Northeast at the 24th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 1 student competition in Morristown, N.J. November 15-16.

SUNY Delhi placed second in the heavy civil category, competing against 11 teams, and placed third in the design-build category, competing against eight teams. The ASC Region 1 student competition was conducted in three categories- design-build, commercial, and heavy civil. This is the first time SUNY Delhi has competed in all three categories.

"We can now say that we have placed in the design-build category for two consecutive years and are proud to announce placing in the heavy civil in our first year competing in that category," said Jared Yando, instructor of Construction Technology and Management at SUNY Delhi. "It is rare to have a school place in more than one category as SUNY Delhi did in this year's competition."

Other colleges and universities who participated in the regional competition included Alfred State College, Central Connecticut State University, Clarkson University, Drexel University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Norwich University, Old Dominion University, Pennsylvania College of Technology, Polytechnic Institute of New York University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Roger Williams University, State University of New York/ESF, The Pratt Institute, University of Maine, Utica College, and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The competition process allows students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to a real-world situation by participating in estimating and proposal simulations. They interpret bid documents, plan means and methods, perform quantity measurements, apply unit and labor pricing, analyze subcontractor quotes, create schedules and submit proposals. Teams are evaluated by industry judges on the quality of their proposals and oral presentations.

SUNY Delhi's Construction Management: Design and Building programs have an advantage over other programs of their type by offering a unique blend of architecture, liberal arts, mathematics, science, construction management and business management courses. Graduates earn a Bachelor of Technology degree and benefit from Delhi's industry partnerships.

These partnerships allow Delhi students to put their practical knowledge to work through extensive internship opportunities, many of which have led to employment for Delhi construction majors.

Delhi Construction Management graduates are qualified to proceed directly to employment as entry-level field superintendents, project managers, estimators, project engineers, field engineers, schedulers/expeditors, and field inspectors, or they may start their own construction business. They may also pursue a Master's in Construction Management, MBA or a graduate-level degree in another field. Delhi has a 100 percent placement rate for Construction Management graduates.

Students who graduate from the following AAS degree programs at Delhi can pursue the college's Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management: Carpentry, Electrical Construction and Instrumentation, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Integrated Energy Systems and Welding Technology.

SUNY Delhi has a long-standing reputation as a premier instructional program for all aspects of building construction technology and related areas, offering the first construction curriculum in the U.S. beginning in 1933.
