SUNY Delhi Volunteer Efforts Commemorate 9/11

DELHI, NY (09/10/2009)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi students, staff and faculty are joining the nation in remembering 9/11 by participating in three days of community service as part of the college's "United We Serve" program beginning today September 9

"This is a day of renewal and recovery for our nation. What a perfect opportunity for students to volunteer their time and feel that they are a part of a larger effort," said Elizabeth Sova, the new coordinator for Delhi's O'Connor Center for Community Service.

An American Red Cross Blood Drive was held from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Murphy Hall with students, faculty and staff doing their part to provide blood cells and plasma to those in need. As part of the annual blood drive program, the college has been challenged to increase the total donations by students, faculty, staff, and community members over the academic year. The American Red Cross will provide a scholarship to Delhi if the college increases its donations for the year.

On Thursday, September 10, students will serve a meal at the Delhi Senior Meals site, and on Friday, September 11, at 10:30 a.m., students and staff will visit Countryside Care Center to entertain residents. Also on September 11 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., students will assist Delaware Opportunities by weeding and harvesting the new Food Bank Garden in Hamden. The garden is part of a new program to grow organic produce locally and distribute the food to senior meal sites throughout Delaware County.

The O'Connor Center for Community Service matches individual students, groups, classes, faculty and staff volunteers with service opportunities in local non-profit agencies and organizations. The Center provides a clearinghouse for community organizations seeking assistance. In the past, over 72% of SUNY Delhi students have participated in volunteer service. The O'Connor Center has been named to the President's Honor Roll for the past three consecutive years.

Planning is underway for the fall Community Service day to be held Saturday, October 17. Please contact Elizabeth Sova at (607) 746-4781.
