SUNY-ESF, Delhi Partnership Offers Exclusive Transfer Agreement

DELHI, NY (03/08/2013)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi is making it easier for its landscape architecture majors to take the next step toward a four-year degree.

This fall a transfer agreement will allow eligible students who are enrolled in SUNY Delhi's Landscape Management and Design associate degree program the opportunity to pursue a bachelor's degree at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse following the completion of a two-year degree at Delhi.

SUNY-ESF requires a 90 average, which can be a hurdle for some high school graduates. "This program will attract students who can benefit from smaller classrooms and one-on-one attention in their first years of college," said Birgitta Brophy, associate professor of landscape architecture at SUNY Delhi. "Receiving specialized attention early on can translate into greater success for the student in the long run."

SUNY Delhi offers many opportunities for students seeking to complete a bachelor's degree, both on campus and with partner institutions. "We are proud to partner with SUNY-ESF," said Dean Eric Robert, Applied Sciences and Building Technologies at SUNY Delhi. "This is a fine example of how academic institutions can collaborate and make the process as seamless as possible for students." According to Robert, this agreement is timely since the New York State Department of Labor estimates a 12 percent increase in employment opportunities for landscape architects over the next five years, and an increase nationwide as high as 17 percent.

"This new dual admission agreement further strengthens the long-standing transfer partnership between SUNY-ESF and Delhi. This dual admission agreement should enhance Delhi's ability to attract top students to its excellent Landscape Design and Management program and prepare them for junior-level transfer into the Department of Landscape Architecture at SUNY-ESF," according to Thomas R. Fletcher, associate director of admissions at SUNY-ESF.

SUNY Delhi's Landscape Management and Design program combines practical and theoretical experience in the design and installation of residential and commercial landscapes. Students design projects on campus and in the community for both residential and commercial applications, often assisting the college with campus projects. Facilities provide indoor and outdoor learning environments and include a design studio, computer labs, display gardens, a 280-acre natural arboretum, a tree and shrub nursery and production and education greenhouses. Select facilities are available evenings and weekends to afford students the flexibility they may need in their weekly schedule.

Landscape architecture is one of the oldest programs at SUNY-ESF, which was founded in 1911. It is one of the largest such programs in the United States, with 20 full-and part-time faculty members. Since 1970 it has required a semester of off-campus study through which students have worked on projects all over the world.
