SUNY Plattsburgh Student Association to Host Faculty Showcase Series

PLATTSBURGH, NY (02/24/2009)(readMedia)-- The Academic Affairs Board of the SUNY Plattsburgh Student Association has announced a new initiative aimed at providing a venue for faculty and students to showcase and discuss their published books, articles and research. All events in the series are free and open to the public.

The first event in the series will be held on Wednesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Conference Room of the Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Dr. Richard Robbins, a SUNY distinguished teaching professor of anthropology, and Dr. Gary Kroll, an associate professor of history, will discuss their recent publication of "World in Motion," a book on globalization and the environment.

The book is a collection of essays that look at the clash between prosperity and the environment. Through these, Robbins and Kroll seek to answer questions like "Can environmental and social problems be fixed through a growing economy, or do we need to radically transform our way of life to maintain the health of the world around us?"

Junior Morgan Pellerin, Academic Affairs Board chair, hopes that the series will "help the college and the community understand the work that faculty members do when they aren't in the classroom while furthering the academic integrity of the campus."

The series will also include talks by students and faculty who have conducted research together. The second event in the series will be held on April 1, when Dr. Nancy Elwess, an associate professor of biology, will discuss the research she and her students are currently doing in genetics.
