PLATTSBURGH, NY (03/24/2009)(readMedia)-- SUNY Plattsburgh music student Rebecca Pethes will present her Senior Voice Recital on Sunday, April 5, at 2 p.m. in the Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall, located on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
Pethes will graduate in May with her Bachelor of Arts in music. She is a voice student of Timothy Morningstar, adjunct lecturer in music. Accompanying Pethes for the recital will be music faculty member and pianist Dr. Karen Becker.
The program will open with the vocal showcase aria "Laudamus te" from "Mozart's Mass in C Minor." Pethes will continue with Schumann's Romantic masterpiece, "Frauenliebe und Leben,"a song cycle that chronicles the phases of a woman's love life from the first sight of her beloved through marriage, childbirth and the death of her husband. The audience may recognize the aria "Una voce poco fa" from Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Seviglia." In her performance of the work, Pethes will incorporate previously unpublished variants that Rossini himself wrote for the opera.
The second half of the program will begin with Mozart's "Porgi Amor," a beautiful lament of lost love, from "Le Nozze di Figaro." A set of French melodies by Fauré will also be featured. The English portion of the program will consist of 20th century songs by American composers Barber and Hoiby, as well as a delightful parody of a Handel aria with a modern twist.
