PLATTSBURGH, NY (11/06/2009)(readMedia)-- For SUNY Plattsburgh University Police Officer Robert Light, Washington, D.C., is just a bicycle ride away. He will journey there from northern New Jersey as part of the Police Unity Tour to honor fallen law enforcement officers.
"The purpose of the Police Unity Tour is two-fold. The first and foremost is raising awareness of officers who have died in the line of duty," said Light. "The second is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund."
Leaving on May 9, Light and more than 1,000 other riders will complete the 300-plus-mile trip over four days during National Police Week. The tour will end with a candlelight vigil for those officers who have died.
"I have participated in eight or nine Rides for Missing Children from Albany to Utica, and I was looking for a new way to get involved when I heard about the Police Unity Tour," said Light.
In order to participate, Light must raise $1,700, but he hopes he will be able to raise $2,000 through donations from local police stations, private organizations, and individuals.
