POTSDAM, NY (07/23/2014)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam Alumni Association recently presented Dr. Linda A. Pape '65 with the 2014 Minerva Award during the College's annual Reunion Weekend.

The Minerva Award is presented annually to an alumnus or alumna who has demonstrated outstanding professional achievement in his or her field. It is the highest honor that a SUNY Potsdam graduate can receive from the association.

Dr. Pape was recognized for her outstanding professional achievements and contributions to the medical community.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Linda A. Pape has specialized in the field of cardiology. She currently provides patient care, conducts clinical research and has been a professor of medicine and pathology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center since 1979.

Dr. Pape received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from SUNY Potsdam and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, which was the first women's medical school. She held residencies in internal medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

Dr. Pape has achieved certification in internal medicine and in cardiovascular disease from the American Board of Internal Medicine. Her clinical interests include diagnostic cardiology, echocardiography, general cardiology and valvular heart disease. She has contributed to more than 100 publications, including Cardiology, Archives of Internal Medicine and the American Journal of Cardiology. Dr. Pape holds "Meaningful Use Stage I" certification from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

As a student at SUNY Potsdam, Dr. Pape was active as a member of the Freshman Advisory Board, the Women's Student Government and the Agonian Sorority. She originally attended Potsdam to be an elementary education major, but chose the College because she wanted to be at a school with lots of music. As such, she sang in Crane Chorus for two years. She eventually changed her major to chemistry and completed her undergraduate studies in just three years, being among the first to matriculate from the College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. Sharing her love of teaching, her husband is a professor of German at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
