POTSDAM, NY (09/22/2011)(readMedia)-- Sponsors and players at the 23rd Annual SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic on Sept. 8 broke last year's record for proceeds to the scholarship fund by raising $93,000.
"It was a great day for everyone," said Vicki Templeton-Cornell, vice president for College Advancement. "Golfers had a beautiful day to golf, sponsors and businesses had a great opportunity to meet and interact with our student scholars, and the students had a chance to thank the sponsors for their generosity."
Last year, the event raised $85,000, which was a part of almost $2.3 million in scholarships awarded to 960 recipients.
Northland Associates, this year's title sponsor, endowed a scholarship, and the recipient this year, Michael Talbot, was the student speaker at the awards ceremony following the tournament.
Other major sponsors this year included Renzi Foodservice, Honeywell, Casella Waste Services, J.E. Sheehan Contracting Corporation, Mach Architecture & Engineering, Inc., SYSCO Albany, Time Warner Cable Business Class and Usherwood Office Technology.
"This tournament wouldn't be what it is without the more than 100 sponsors that we have at all levels, as well as the many volunteers who assist in the organization and operation of the tournament," said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller. "We will continue our mission to raise awareness and funds for student scholarships."
The team sponsored by CKON Radio in Hogansburg was the winning Summit Flight team. Members of the team included Andy Cook, Julia Back-Skidders, Victoria Thompson, Cole Cree, Timmy Thompson and Jeremiah Wood.
The overall winner in the women's flight was the team of Margaret Dwyer, Karen O'Brien, Mary Scott, Joyce Doran, Barb Nagel and Kim Bradshaw.
Work on the 24th Annual SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic will begin in October, and the 2012 title sponsor spot is still available at press time. Businesses interested in sponsorship can contact Ellen Nesbitt in the Office of College Advancement at (315) 267-3403 or nesbitem@potsdam.edu.
