SUNY Upstate Medical University to Hold Annual Healthcare Career Expo March 7

SYRACUSE, NY (03/02/2009)(readMedia)-- SUNY Upstate Medical University will hold its annual Healthcare Career Expo March 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Institute for Human Performance, 505 Irving Avenue, Syracuse. Free parking is available in the rear of the building, off Madison Street.

SUNY Upstate officials say about 100 jobs are currently available to be filled. Most positions are in healthcare fields, such as nursing, physical, occupational and respiratory therapy, pharmacy and clinical pathology. Other positions are available in the areas of research, financial services and housekeeping.

"We're looking for a broad range of people for a variety of positions," said Eric Frost, associate vice president for human resources. "While healthcare experience will be a requirement for some jobs, there are others where that kind of experience is not necessary."

Frost said that with the proper training a career change to healthcare is a real possibility. "We have individuals working at SUNY Upstate who began their careers in other fields such as manufacturing or financial services," he said. "We'd be interested in speaking with those considering career changes to let them know how to proceed and how we might be able to help."

Like many state agencies, SUNY Upstate has a hiring freeze in place for some positions due to budget constraints. "The positions we have available today need to be filled so that we can continue to meet the demand for services," he said.

Nursing positions are available in many units through the hospital. Some of the open non-patient care positions include outpatient administrative specialist in the adult psychiatry clinic, billing advisor, financial improvement coordinator.

Frost said the hospital, which is in operation 24 hours a day, provides an array of schedule options that job seekers might find beneficial.

SUNY Upstate is the area's largest employer with a workforce of approximately 7,000. As an academic medical center, it provides patient care, education, research and community outreach to an 18-county region from Canada to Pennsylvania.
