Salvador Muñoz Viñas

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (04/09/2013)(readMedia)-- On Monday, April 15, author Salvador Muñoz Viñas will speak at Hampden-Sydney College on the topic, "Is it true that truth matters? The problem of authenticity in heritage conservation."

Muñoz Viñas was born in 1963 in Valencia, Spain, where he continues to live, teach, and do research. He has two licenciaturas (university five-year degrees) in Fine Arts and Art History. In 1991 he received a Ph.D. in Fine Arts, with research on the techniques and materials of Southern Italy Renaissance miniature painting; and he has done substantial work toward a Ph.D. in Paper Engineering, with research on paper flattening techniques.

He is a Professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), and Head of the paper conservation section of the UPV Conservation Research Institute. He was Secretary of the Conservation Department of the UPV between 1991 and 1997, and Director of the same between 2010 and 2012.

Muñoz Viñas has worked as a paper conservator in the Historical Library of the University of Valencia and as a visiting scholar in Harvard's Straus Center for Conservation. He has published a number of articles and books on practical and theoretical aspects of conservation, such as The Technical Analysis of Renaissance Miniature Paintings (co-authored with Eugene F. Farrell; Cambridge, MA, 1995), Contemporary Theory of Conservation (Oxford, 2004), and La restauración del papel (Madrid, 2010). His current research interests are in conservation theory and paper conservation techniques.
