COLCHESTER, VT (05/31/2013)(readMedia)-- Oxbow Union High school honor student Sarah Burridge was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to attend Saint Michael's College this fall. Ms. Burridge, the daughter of Laurie and Russall Burridge of Newbury, Vt., received a First-Generation-Student Scholarship from Vermont EPSCoR, (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) awarded at ceremonies May 16th at the annual meeting held at the Sheraton in Burlington.

An athlete and a scholar, Ms. Burridge plans to study biology and anthropology at Saint Michael's. She hopes to earn a doctoral degree after that, with the goal of becoming a forensic anthropologist.

A member of the National Honor Society, Ms. Burridge is working on becoming a black belt in Kenpo and Ju-Jitsu Karate along with obtaining an Assistant Instructor patch. She was selected by her school to participate in the national Hugh O-Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) training program. She volunteers her time at USA Karate, Green-Up Day, providing Thanksgiving dinners for the community, and more.

Sarah has participated in the Vermont EPSCoR Streams Project for all four years of high school, collecting water quality data on the Waits River. Her work has added to a long-term, high-quality database on water quality in Vermont streams.

Saint Michael's biology Professor Declan McCabe has led the streams research project for many summers, guiding Saint Michael's students and some area high school students into serious research.
