GEORGETOWN, TX (10/24/2012)(readMedia)-- Sarah Puffer of Porter has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club of Georgetown, Texas. She will be honored Oct. 25 at an event recognizing Boys & Girls Club volunteers from Georgetown, Gatesville, Killeen, Lampasas and Copperas Cove.

Puffer has been instrumental in revitalizing the club's garden program and is in the process of helping the organization begin a clubwide recycling program. She also mentored a student at the club this year.

"Sarah is one of those individuals who needs little or no direction from us, which is nice," said Daniel Anstee, branch director of the Boys & Girls Club of Georgetown. "She just needs a green light and does the rest."

Puffer is a junior environmental studies and international studies major at Southwestern University in Georgetown and has been active in Southwestern's community garden. She wrote a proposal for a SEED grant from Southwestern to build a new garden at the Boys & Girls Club, and has been taking other students to the club every week to run a garden club program. In addition to teaching students about gardening, the program is teaching students about the importance of good nutrition.
