School District Calls Goewey Back to Work

ALBANY, NY (06/22/2007)(readMedia)-- The School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS), representing Riley Elementary Principal Dean Goewey, is pleased to learn that Goeway has been called back to work in the Owego City School District.

Goewey was first suspended for what SAANYS believes is a result of his union activities in the school district and his refusal to sign an unfair evaluation. The district has brought claims of reported sexual harassment against Goewey, which Goewey vehemently denies.

By the show of support at Goewey’s school district hearing on May 17, which the district had first denied him but was then ordered by the court to hold, the community seems behind Goewey, a long-time educator at Oswego. It is hoped that calling Goewey back to work is a genuine effort to begin resolving this issue, rather than a means of appeasing an appalled school community. Despite this, the board, under the influence of Superintendent David Fischer, refuses to drop any charges against Goewey and will proceed with a pre-hearing conference next week.

SAANYS represents over 6,700 school administrators, supervisors, and coordinators. As a professional association, SAANYS provides direction, service and support to the membership in their efforts to improve the quality of education and leadership in New York State schools. SAANYS is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
