ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (04/12/2012)(readMedia)-- Haredim, a group of devout, orthodox Jews, who are theologically, socially and politically conservative, will be discussed by Snowden Lecturer Benyamin Neuberger at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Bucher Meetinghouse at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College.
Haredim, sometimes referred to as ultra-orthodox, use the Torah's written and oral law to determine every aspect of their life. Neuberger, professor of political science and African studies at the Open University of Israel, will explore the highly religious Haredim and Amish communities in Israel and the U.S. and will compare their basic attitudes toward the state, its political system, government, laws and judiciary.
Neuberger has published widely on nationalism and ethnicity. He was named the Snowden Fellow for 2010, but was unable to fulfill his appointment until this spring. The Snowden fellowship and lecture are endowed by Lucille Snowden in memory of C. Armon Snowden. The lecture, is free and open to the public.
