POTSDAM, NY (06/30/2011)(readMedia)-- Four decades into a legendary Metropolitan Opera career, tenor Plácido Domingo made history singing the title role in Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Simon Boccanegra," which is written for a baritone.

Now North Country audiences can take in this remarkable performance in the next installment of the 2011 Summer Encore series from The Met: Live in HD. "Simon Boccanegra" will screen at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 11 in Potsdam's Roxy Theater. The opera will be performed in Italian, with English subtitles. The expected running time is two hours, 30 minutes.

Verdi's gripping political thriller stars Domingo as Simon Boccanegra, who is elected doge of Genoa, just as his beloved dies in prison after giving birth to their illegitimate child. The New York Times called Domingo's performance "some of his freshest singing in years." Adrianne Pieczonka, Marcello Giordani, and James Morris are his co-stars in this moving story of a father and his lost daughter.

The Metropolitan Opera's award-winning series of live performance transmissions to movie theaters around the world will return to Potsdam this summer through the third season of The Met: Live in HD Summer Encores. The 2011 Summer Encore season will celebrate the masters of Italian opera, with productions of works by Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti and Rossini.

In the North Country, SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music and J.S. Cinemas sponsor the 2010-11 season of The Met: Live in HD.
