'Seinfeld' writer Peter Mehlman discusses challenges of media writing, reads at Bowers Writer's House Feb. 18

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (01/29/2013)(readMedia)-- "Seinfeld" writer and producer Peter Mehlman discusses the challenges of writing for two distinct media -- print and television -- during his talk at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Elizabethtown College's Bowers Writers House.

Mehlman who rose to executive producer and coined such Seinfeld-isms as "Yada Yada" "spongeworthy," "shrinkage" and "double-dipping," presents "Playing with Fire: Moving Between Print and Screen."

He also will read from his own work during "Beyond the Narrow World of Sports," at 8 p.m. in the College's Brinser Lecture Room. Both events are free, but reservations are required for the 4 p.m. talk.

In recent years, Mehlman has written screenplays, a novel and humor pieces for NPR, Esquire, The New York Times, Washington Post and LA Times, while also appearing on-camera for TNT Sports.

Bowers Writers House hosts a number of additional free events this winter. Space is limited; arrive at least 30 minutes early.

  • 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 – Reading with Jay Varner -- Pennsylvania native Jay Varner's memoir, "Nothing Left to Burn," is the story of a son's relationship with his father, a fire chief and local hero, and his grandfather, a serial arsonist.
  • 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 – "Right Angles, Write Directions: Writing and Success in the Engineering Sciences" -- Scott Ganz of Data Tactics Corp. discusses the strong writing skills needed in the engineering world.
  • 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 – "Powerful Science, Purposeful Language: My Journey Writing through the Worlds of Progress" -- Award-winning journalist Nancy Shute discusses current trends in science writing and significance of effective writing in the sciences
  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 – "The Curious Reception History of Edward MacDowell" -- Dr. Douglas Bomberger discusses the effects of modernism, recording technology and composer Edward MacDowell.
