Sen. Myrie, Sen. Gianaris, AM Walker + Let NY Vote Rally Ahead of AVR Vote
Legislature set to pass automatic voter registration as session wraps up
NEW YORK, NY (06/18/2019) (readMedia)-- Tomorrow, Elections Committee Chairman Senator Zellnor Myrie, Senator Mike Gianaris, Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, and the Let NY Vote Coalition will join together to rally ahead of the upcoming vote on automatic voter registration (AVR). In January, Let NY Vote celebrated historic victories, including early voting and pre-registration of 16 and 17 year olds.
AVR would allow eligible New Yorkers to register to vote when they interact with a government agency (i.e., the DMV, Department of Health), streamlining the process and making it more accessible. Currently, there are 1.1 million New Yorkers who are eligible to vote, but unregistered. 15 states and Washington DC have already implemented some form of AVR. Last month the Senate held the first-ever hearing on AVR.
The New York State legislature is set to pass AVR on Wednesday.
