Seven Storm Lake Natives Honored at Buena Vista University

STORM LAKE, IA (06/17/2013)(readMedia)-- The following students from Storm Lake were recently honored at Buena Vista University's (BVU) student recognition event:

Monica Figueroa Vaca – Sophomore with an undecided major

Jennifer Galm – Senior art major

Bryan Hays – Art major who recently graduated

Michael Ivey – Senior management and marketing major

Samantha Kavan – Junior management and marketing major

Miguel Munoz-Gomez – Biology and Spanish major who recently graduated

Alex Paine – Biology major who recently graduated

Galm was presented with the Mac Hornecker Artistic Enrichment Grant, a competitive grant opportunity which provides an award to a BVU art student/students for financial help to accomplish an art project, art related experience, or internship which will enrich their artistic future.

Hays and Ivey were two of several students who benefited from the Otteman Student Research and Internship Fund which supports student research by supplying them with allocations to pursue learning opportunities.

Hays also received the Art Senior of the Year Award from BVU's School of Communication & Arts.

Both Kavan and Paine were inducted into Alpha Chi, a national honor society recognizing scholarship in all disciplines, promoting academic achievement and encouraging its members to continue their lives as scholars. Membership is restricted to ten percent of the senior class having a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and five percent of the junior class having a cumulative grade point average of 3.65 or higher.

Kavan was also one of nine students to receive the Clifford A. Rae Academic Achievement Award. This endowed award supports annual awards for pre-qualified, high performing BVU business majors each academic year.

Both Munoz-Gomex and Vaca were presented with the John & Susan Aschenbrenner Student Development Stipend. It is granted to students who are involved in organizations that focus on issues, such as immigration, that advance the role and participation of Hispanics in United States culture and politics.

Munoz-Gomez was also named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, based on outstanding scholastic, campus and community activities.
