READING, PA (04/30/2013)(readMedia)-- Announced during an honors ceremony on April 21, 2013, two Alvernia students received the inaugural "Jennie J. Palkon, née Lis and John S. Palkon Scholarship" awards. Edwin Torres received the award for his field of business, and Shelby Hickox received the award for her field of nursing.
Nursing student Shelby Hickox, Littleton, Mass., is an active member of the Student Nurse Association, and has performed in theatre, helped freshmen with new student orientation, and served as a tour guide on campus. She is a graduate of Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School.
A business management major, Edwin Torres, West Lawn, Pa., is a member of several clubs and honor societies on campus, most notably serving as President of the Society for Human Resource Management. He is a graduate of Wilson High School.
This new award has been graciously provided by Dr. Dennis Palkon in memory and honor of his parents Jennie J. Palkon, née Lis and John S. Palkon in recognition of the importance of education in business and in nursing. This scholarship is given to a current full time junior studying one of Alvernia University's five business majors, and a student majoring in nursing. These students must demonstrate exemplary academic achievement as well as service and leadership participation.
