Shelly Le of South Salt Lake Wins Second Consecutive Hosokawa Journalism Award

WALLA WALLA, WA (04/09/2013)(readMedia)-- Shelly Le of South Salt Lake recently won a Hosokawa Award for Best News Story. The award was delivered by Terry Tang, deputy editorial page editor for the New York Times. Tang visited the Whitman College campus to give a speech and distribute the awards on March 28.

Le's article was featured in the Pioneer, Whitman College's student-run newspaper. In the story, she discussed tuition costs at Whitman compared with national trends and the effect that tuition hikes could have on future college students.

Le won a Hosokawa Award for Best Feature Story in 2012 as well.

Le is the daughter of Buu Le and Huong Hong from South Salt Lake, Utah. She is a 2010 graduate of Cottonwood High School.

At Whitman, Le is a junior politics major, and a member of Whitman Direct Action, a student-run organization that is dedicated to helping marginalized people by promoting economically and environmentally sustainable community development.
