CHESTER, PA (05/28/2013)(readMedia)-- Frances Smith of Harrisburg, Pa., was commissioned as a second lieutenant of the U.S. Army through the ROTC program at Widener University. She graduated from Widener on May 18 with a degree in nursing.
As a member of Widener's Dauntless Battalion, Smith completed the Leader Development and Assessment Course. During her senior year, she served as the company first sergeant.
Smith will serve the Army as a nurse officer and will attend the basic officer leader course at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.
Prior to her commissioning, Smith was honored with the Aram S. Papazian Commencement Award for demonstrating superior qualities of leadership and academic and athletic achievement. She also received the Dauntless Battalion Nurse Excellence Award for academic achievement, professionalism and potential as a future Army Nurse Corps officer.
