Spring Street Climate Fund Statement About NYISO Reliability Announcement
BROOKLYN, NY (10/15/2025) (readMedia)-- Spring Street Climate Fund statement about NYISO reliability announcement:
"Once again, our grid operator is foreseeing a reliability problem on New York's mostly gas-powered electrical grid, indicating once again that our electricity market has failed to invest sufficiently in the clean, cheap sources of energy that will lead to affordable energy bills for the long term. After years of failure that drive up energy costs, it's time for Governor Hochul to step in and rethink our electricity market to protect ratepayers.
The real solution is not, as NYISO says, to keep expensive gas plants operating longer, harming our communities and driving up costs. The real solution is for state government to directly oversee a rapid buildout of transmission and renewable energy, including following through on NYPA's new mandate to finance and build renewable energy around the state. State government should also direct a large-scale investment in distributed energy resources, such as batteries, rooftop solar and smart appliances--starting with the parts of the state where NYISO is raising reliability concerns. We also have to ensure that data centers and other speculative energy gobblers pay their share of costs to protect households from subsidizing the new electricity needs of the world's largest corporations. And we should use public funds to absolve utility customers of some of these costs and provide rebates for near-term relief.
Governor Hochul didn't create these problems, but she can pioneer solutions that protect New Yorkers from skyrocketing energy costs and build out the infrastructure we will need to enjoy cheap, clean electricity for generations. It's an opportunity for leadership that will make a difference."
