State DOT Assesses Storm Damage, Urges Drivers to Plan Routes

Commissioner McDonald Urges Motorists to Obey Road Closures

ALBANY, NY (08/30/2011)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today urged motorists to avoid flooded roadways and plan ahead for travel in eastern New York State, which is recovering from Sunday's Tropical Storm Irene.

"The Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Catskills and Hudson Valley are still prone to flooding and we ask motorists to obey signs and barriers banning access to hazardous bridges and highways," Commissioner McDonald said. "At Governor Andrew Cuomo's direction, we have deployed hundreds of department experts to assess highway damage and make repairs that will restore our transportation infrastructure and ensure safe travel."

Commissioner McDonald encouraged motorists to get the latest information on road closures and travel conditions by dialing 511 on their telephones or visiting http://www.511ny.org .
