State DOT Urges Labor Day Weekend Travelers to Plan Ahead

Bridge and Highway Conditions Changing; Check 511 Before Heading Out

ALBANY, NY (08/31/2011)(readMedia)-- In preparation for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner (NYSDOT) Joan McDonald today urged motorists to plan their holiday travels carefully in order to avoid flooded roadways and ensure their destinations are open for business and accessible.

"The effects of Tropical Storm Irene are still being felt throughout eastern New York, making it all the more important for travelers this weekend to plan their routes carefully and obey signs and barriers banning access to hazardous bridges and highways," Commissioner McDonald said. "State DOT crews are working hard to assess highway damage so that roads and bridges can be reopened as quickly as possible. We ask that motorists check conditions before hitting the highway to help ensure that everyone makes it home safely."

Commissioner McDonald encouraged motorists to get the latest information on road closures and travel conditions by dialing 511 on their telephones or visiting http://www.511ny.org .

Bridge and highway conditions in flooded areas are continuing to change.
