NEW YORK, NY (10/28/2026) (readMedia)-- Statement from Mark Treyger, CEO of JCRC-NY, on Early Voting and Strengthening Access to Democracy
"The strong early voting turnout across New York is an encouraging reminder that our democracy is strongest when people are empowered to participate and make their voices heard.
But democracy is not measured by turnout alone. It is also measured by how effectively we remove barriers to participation, ensuring every eligible voter, regardless of language, background, faith, or disability, can exercise this fundamental right.
This commitment has been central to my public service. As a City Council Member, I helped secure funding to launch and expand language interpretation services at polling sites, work that preceded today's broader efforts through the NYC Civic Engagement Commission. As Education Committee Chair, I also championed historic capital investments in school accessibility, recognizing that schools must welcome not only students, staff, and families, but also the voters who rely on them as polling places.
At JCRC-NY, we remain committed to building on this progress through civic education, multilingual voter outreach, and stronger community engagement, including helping New Yorkers understand voter registration, eligibility, and participation in primary and general elections.
Increased participation is a reason for optimism, but not complacency. Our work continues until every eligible voter has a meaningful opportunity to participate, every barrier is challenged, and every community feels seen, heard, and respected.
A stronger democracy is not simply one in which more people vote, but one in which more people can vote."
