Statement on the Passage of the Environmental Access to Justice Act by the New York State Assembly

ALBANY, NY (06/18/2010)(readMedia)-- Adirondack Council, Adirondack Mountain Club, Center for Working Families, Environmental Advocates of New York, New York Public Interest Research Group, and Scenic Hudson were pleased to see the New York State Assembly pass legislation last night that restores the original legislative intent of the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA). The Environmental Access to Justice Act allows groups or individuals to challenge the results of deficient SEQRA reviews by state agencies or local governments. The bill creates legal standing for the public that will result in better decisions that protect and conserve natural resources critical to the environment and appropriate economic development.

We would also like to recognize Assemblyman Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst), the bill's sponsor, for ensuring the passage of this important measure in his house.

The Environmental Access to Justice Act is a 2010 Super Bill, or legislation designated as a high priority by the statewide environmental community, and would help New Yorkers weigh-in on proposed developments and projects that impact the environment.
