Statewide Mental Health Groups Call on State to Pass Budget before Directly Impacting Individuals

With Psychiatric Disabilities

ALBANY, NY (06/07/2010)(readMedia)-- Mental Health Advocacy Groups from across New York State are holding a press conference at 11 o'clock on June 8th in Room 130 of the Legislative Office Building.

The press conference is about the impact of a post June 30th budget to the mental health community. Many non-profit mental health agencies rely on state aid to pay for the programs that they run. If the budget is passed after June 30th, the state will not provide funding to the counties that then filter that funding to community agencies. In addition, funding on direct state contracts for similarly vital services will not be paid.

As a result, there will be an immediate impact as of July 1st which could result in programs closing down, effecting thousands of individuals with psychiatric disabilities who will face services that will be severely curtailed or closed down completely.

The participants in the press conference represent hundreds of provider agencies serving over two hundred thousand New Yorkers with psychiatric disabilities.
