DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2010)(readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, a member of the Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation, announced today that Stephanie Haines of Grinnell was among the 10 students to receive a Robert D. Blue scholarship award for the 2010-2011 school year. The Foundation honored Stephanie and the other winners at a ceremony in Des Moines, with Governor Chester Culver presenting students with the scholarship. The Robert D. Blue Scholarship, which is given by the Foundation, awarded $1,000 to ten Iowa students to assist in covering expenses at an Iowa college. The recipients represented 10 Iowa counties.

"Students must be a citizen of Iowa and demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character," commented State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald. "Stephanie is an excellent example of the type of student that we were looking for." Stephanie Haines will be attending Grinnell College in the fall.

Awards were based on the review of an application, letters of recommendation, scholastic achievement, and an essay on the responsibility of a citizen toward his or her community.

Foundation members include Governor Chester Culver, Attorney General Tom Miller, State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, Board of Education President Rosie Hussey; former governors Tom Vilsack, Terry Branstad, Robert Ray, and Robert Fulton; and citizen members Nancy Nichols, Elaine Estes, Lee Henely and Patrick Lynch
