Students, Electeds, Teachers Rally for Arts Funding in Final Weeks of Budget Negotiations

New York City Arts in Education Roundtable joins students across the city, educators and NYC Council Majority Leader Keith Powers and Council Member Chi Ossé to call for the City to fully fund "It Starts with the Arts"

NEW YORK, NY (06/14/2023) (readMedia)-- On Thursday – as City lawmakers debate the final budget – the New York City Arts in Education Roundtable, educators, students, and City Council Members including Majority Leader Keith Powers, and Libraries, and International Intergroup Relations Chair Chi Ossé will call on the Mayor and the City Council to guarantee all schools have a certified arts teacher in order to address inequality, mental wellness issues, and to equitably improve overall student performance.

Before the pandemic, a majority of principals noted that funding for the arts was inadequate. And now, the pandemic has only exacerbated this problem, making the need for guaranteed arts education to help students equitably recover and thrive socially, emotionally, and academically even more critical. Research shows that arts education improves student performance, mental health and the overall chances of success later in life.
