Editors from The Flyer student newspaper were recognized with six awards by the Illinois College Press Association at the organization's annual journalism convention in Chicago. Student journalists from four-year colleges and universities throughout Illinois compete for the coveted awards. Audrey Heiberger, a current layout editor for the print edition was presented with a third place award in the Open Category for an advertisement she created to promote International Education Month, a special event held during November 2013 at Lewis University. The judge admired Heiberger's use of various design elements and white space. Julie Szamlewski, layout editor for the print edition during the fall 2012 semester, earned an honorable mention award in the Open Category for a promotional advertisement she designed. The advertisement, published in the Dec. 12, 2012 issue, promoted the Meet the Campus Media event. In the Open Category, Heiberger and Szamlewski competed against layout designers representing the largest universities throughout the state. Brian Neal, sports editor, Nicole Kappelman, assistant sports editor and Kendra Mills, layout editor, accepted a second place award for their sports page design in the Non-Dailies, School Enrollment 4,000 or More Category. The judge critiqued the layout and content of the Nov. 18 lead sports page and complimented the editors for strong art that " jumped off the page" and a "good, clean layout all around." Ross Reed, news editor during the fall 2013 semester, Alex Veeneman, assistant news editor during the fall 2013 semester, and Audrey Heiberger, layout editor, earned a third place award for front page layout in the Non-Dailies, School Enrollment, 4,000 or More Category. Judges reviewed the front page articles and layout of the Oct. 21, Nov. 4 and Nov. 18 issues. The three editors worked together to create front pages that were both well-written and beautifully designed. Anthony Kurt, assistant photo editor, was recognized with a third place award in the Non-Dailies, School Enrollment 4,000 or More Category for his photo essay on intramural flag football. Kurt's photo essay was published on TheLewisFlyer.com on Oct. 1, 2013. Kristin Fazio, a staff writer for the sports section, received an honorable mention in the Non-Dailies, School Enrollment 4,000 or More Category for her sports feature story "Coming to America: Lanstiak has come a long way to play tennis for The Flyers" which was published in April 22, 2013 issue. The judge said that Fazio's story included "every element" and referred to the article as "strong."
