Subaru XV Crosstrek to Bring Rugged New Style to New York City
Automaker's Fuel-Efficient New Crossover to Debut at New York International Auto Show
CANTON, CONN. (04/04/2012)(readMedia)-- While New York City isn't exactly an off-roader's mecca, Subaru is bringing a little taste of the outdoors to the 2012 New York International Auto Show in the form of the new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. Debuting on April 5 just a stone's throw from Penn Station and Times Square, the XV Crosstrek will combine off-road capability with a size that can still maneuver the tight squeezes of cities like the Big Apple.
Based on the recently redesigned five-door Subaru Impreza compact, the XV Crosstrek is expected to offer the highest fuel economy of any all-wheel-drive crossover when it arrives at Subaru dealerships this fall. Subaru projects that its 2.0-liter Boxer engine will enable the XV Crosstrek to net up to 33 mpg on the highway, and its 15.9-gallon fuel tank means drivers don't have to worry about filling up often on their adventures. The new Subaru will also offer the all-terrain capability larger Subarus are known for, thanks to a number of body and chassis modifications that will help the XV Crosstrek expand on the Impreza's pavement presence.
"The XV Crosstrek is built for Subaru fans who want one vehicle to handle both the highway commute and unpaved back roads," said Gary Ciesco, general sales manager of Canton, Connecticut Subaru dealer Mitchell Subaru. "Many drivers want the freedom of choosing between staying on the beaten path or taking a spontaneous trip somewhere new. Those people will be Crosstrek drivers."
Although the Subaru XV Crosstrek shares many similarities with its Impreza cousin, it offers a higher ride height, with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and features black cladding on its sides and wheel arches. Roof rails and 17-inch wheels bolster the crossover's capacity to cart gear and handle the elements, while a rocker spoiler, unique front and rear bumpers and dark-tint privacy glass give it a style that separates it from other utility vehicles. Meanwhile, the standard five-speed manual model features Subaru Incline Start Assist, which prevents rolling backwards when pulling away from a stop on a slippery or rugged incline.
While on the road, Subaru XV Crosstrek owners can haul their outdoor gear in the 52.4 cubic-feet of cargo room behind the first row of seats. Standard 60/40 split-back seats and a flat-load floor help drivers load gear easily, while a waterproof tray, tie-down hooks and grocery bag hooks help secure loose items. No matter where they're going, XV Crosstrek owners can make the most of their fuel with a standard ECO gauge that tells drivers when they're operating the vehicle most efficiently.
Subaru fans that want all-conditions capability but plan to stick with roads on the map may want to look into the XV Crosstrek's inspiration, the Subaru Impreza. All new for the 2012 model year, the Impreza receives the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine in the XV Crosstrek but boasts even better fuel economy, returning up to 36 mpg on the highway. The Impreza also comes standard with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, making it fit for tackling inclement New England weather.
"The Impreza is one of the most capable compact cars on the market today, and the Crosstrek brings that capability in crossover form," added Ciesco. "Regardless of which one Connecticut drivers choose, they'll get their adventure without sacrificing fuel efficiency."
