MARIETTA, OH (02/09/2011)(readMedia)-- Eight hours a day for five consecutive days, Taylor Landrie '13 (Buckhannon, W.Va.) will spend her Spring Break with two dozen or so friends. However, there's a twist.
Landrie and the other Marietta College students will be in New Orleans working with a nonprofit called "Relief Spark." Landrie expects the experience to benefit her twofold.
"It's a great opportunity to observe a community that has never lost its spirit. Even after a disaster, New Orleans has one of the most vivid and colorful cultures in our country," she says. "Added to that, it's a chance to give back to people who could use a hand. I think just about everyone can recall a time when they relied on the help of a stranger, even if it was for something small. It only seems fair to pass it on. All of the students going on this trip are deeply committed to service, and I know we're all excited to help such a resilient community in any way possible."
Landrie was also chosen as one of four group leaders, along with Cody Clemens '13 (Malta, Ohio), Krystyna Foley '11 (North Olmsted, Ohio) and Dante Sherman '11 (Cleveland, Ohio).
Marietta College's Spring Break is March 5-13.
