Teachout, AM Niou, Shelter Res: "BDB Stop Letting Rich Neighborhoods & Their Lawyers Make NYC Homeless Policy"
NEW YORK, NY (10/11/2020) (readMedia)-- As a downtown group tries to raise $1 million to fight the entry of Lucerne shelter residents into their neighborhood, Zephyr Teachout and Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou will join with homeless residents from the Lucerne Hotel and UWS Open Hearts to demand Mayor de Blasio stop kowtowing to white New Yorkers' fear of black and brown homeless people.
The downtown group's move came after Bill de Blasio caved to a group of Upper West Siders who started a racist facebook group and raised $150,000 to hire top litigator Randy Mastro to kick Project Renewal shelter residents out of the Lucerne. The Mayor's decision to move the shelter has emboldened NIMBYs across New York City to privately fundraise ever-growing sums to keep shelters out of their neighborhoods. Now, some shelter residents will move -- in the middle of a pandemic -- for the third or even fourth time.
