NEW ROCHELLE, NY (02/28/2012)(readMedia)-- Susan Kern, in her second year as Head Basketball Coach of The College of New Rochelle Blue Angels, has been selected Coach of the Year by the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC). A 2005 graduate of Columbia University, Kern was a standout on the hardwood and earned the team's most valuable player award as a senior. A highly touted prep player, she also won the New York State Section I Con Edison Award in her senior season. In 2009, she joined The College of New Rochelle as the Head Basketball Coach and has made an immediate and positive impact on the Blue Angels' program, leading the 2010-11 squad to a second place finish at its own in-season tournament and developed two of the team's newcomers into all-rookie performers.
On hearing the news of Kern's selection as Coach of the Year, Athletic Director Harold Crocker said, "I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Susan; it is a well-deserved honor. Coach Kern, along with Assistant Coach Kashif Hammed, and the entire team worked hard and had a great season. We are excited by the success of this team and look forward to next year."
Vice President for Student Services Dr. Colette Geary added, "The CNR Athletics Program has been steadily gaining momentum since the opening of our beautiful Wellness Center. We are proud that Coach Kern's talent in both game strategy and player development has been recognized. Her recruiting ability has also been noted, with rookie freshman guard Alyssa Pechin selected for the All Conference team. We expect to see Coach Kern take the Blue Angels basketball program to new heights."
