NEW ROCHELLE, NY (10/26/2011)(readMedia)-- The College of New Rochelle, in collaboration with "Designs for Thinking," recently hosted five days of training workshops in Thinking MapsĀ®.
The 'Thinking Maps Training of Trainers' course is designed to teach teachers how to facilitate higher-levels of thinking and learning within classrooms and the entire school.
According to Dr. Walter Sullivan, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership in CNR's Graduate School, and The Director of The Center for Educational Policy and Practice, "Thinking Maps are a visual language based on eight fundamental cognitive skills. By focusing on content learning and thought processes, Thinking Maps improve students' reading comprehension and writing across all subject areas and from Pre-K to college."
The recent workshops, which took place on October 24 and 25, 2011, were with teachers from school districts in New Rochelle, East Syracuse Minoa, North Rockland City, Ossining, and Eastchester, along with faculty members of the College's undergraduate and graduate schools. These were the fourth and fifth sessions of "Thinking Maps" training to take place on the main campus of The College of New Rochelle. A final workshop with superintendents and principals will take place in February, 2012.
All of the workshops were done by Larry Alper, co-director of 'Designs for Thinking' with the assistance of CNR's Assistant Professor of Education in the Graduate School, Dr. Estrella Lopez.
