NEW ROCHELLE, NY (01/31/2012)(readMedia)-- The College of New Rochelle on Thursday, January 26, 2012 recognized Cassandra Irons of Voluntown, CT, a student in the School of Arts & Sciences, with a 2011 Ursuline Education Award for Service.

The Student Service Recognition Program is sponsored by the Ursuline Educational Services, a collaborative effort of Ursuline congregations to carry their educational traditions into this new millennium. According to the College's Director of Campus Ministry, Helen Wolf, "Each recipient must have completed a specific act of service in the previous academic year."

A double major in math and chemistry, Cassie Irons has taken very seriously her goal of being a woman in science. An RA for the Honors Living and Learning wing in Ursula Hall, she coordinates the integration of first-year Honors students into Honors and campus life. She also serves the Honors Program as editor-in-chief of Femmes d'Esprit, and recently presented at the Northeast Regional Honors Council's annual conference. She is a member of the Blue Angels swim team, an SOS Leader, a Lifeguard at the Wellness Center, and she tutors in both math and writing. In her capacity as a Peer Minister, she took part in both Midnight Runs and the Lord's Pantry, and most recently took part in the Plunge Service Trip last June to West Virginia. Most recently, Cassie was instrumental in the founding of Spectrum, the College's SGA Diversity and LGBT Awareness student organization. She is committed to assisting in the education of our community in understanding people's differences and respecting their dignity.
