NEW ROCHELLE, NY (01/13/2012)(readMedia)-- Starting this month, Public Health Nurses and Junior Public Health Nurses, members of Local 436, United Federation of Nurses and Epidemiologists, will earn their Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing from the School of Nursing of The College of New Rochelle by attending classes at the DC 37 headquarters in lower Manhattan. The nurses join hundreds of other DC 37 members who are now pursuing baccalaureate degrees granted by The College of New Rochelle.

The College of New Rochelle and District Council 37 (DC 37) of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, have enjoyed a unique educational partnership since 1972. In the last 40 years more than 3500 union members have earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College's School of New Resources, the adult education program, by attending classes held at DC-37 headquarters.

This partnership between CNR and DC 37 is further strengthened, according to Mary Alice Donius, Ed.D., Dean of CNR's School of Nursing, with a new pathway to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. "The College of New Rochelle and District Council 37 are responding to a recommendation in a recent report from the Institute of Medicine Report on the Future of Nursing," says Dean Donius, "to increase the number of nurses with Bachelor of Science degrees by the year 2020. The College of New Rochelle is fortunate to be able to meet this challenge through our special partnership with DC-37."
