The Genesee Forum Players Present: In The Blood

BATAVIA, NY (01/06/2011)(readMedia)-- The Genesee Center for the Arts and the Forum Players at Genesee Community College will start the 2011 theatrical season with the dramatic play, In the Blood. Opening on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 7:30PM, subsequent performances include Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5 both at 7:30PM.

In the Blood is a modern interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel, "The Scarlet Letter." The Forum Player's performance is a play set in a post Katrina backdrop that follows the daily trials of Hester, an illiterate, single, homeless, African American woman who must find a way to rise above and care for her five children.

The cast of this production of In the Blood consists of Genesee Community College students known as the "Forum Players" and includes Patrick Dodge playing Baby/Reverend (Warsaw, NY), Alex Farley playing Trouble/Doctor (Pembroke, NY), Alex Grayson playing Jabber/Chilli (Watertown, NY), Jamie Hicks playing Bully/Welfare (Red Creek, NY), Emily Jones playing Beauty/Amiga (Waterloo, NY) and Nikkia Travis playing Hester/La Negrita (Rochester, NY). Tyler Eldred of Dansville, NY is the Stage Manager.

In the Blood is produced and directed by Maryanne Arena, director of the Fine and Performing Arts department at Genesee Community College, with Set Design and Technical Direction by Ed Hallborg, Technical Director and Technical Theatre faculty member at the Genesee Center for the Arts. Choreography is directed by Patti Simmons, an adjunct faculty member of the Fine and Performing Arts department at Genesee Community College.

"The cast and crew have worked incredibly hard and have shown an amazing amount of dedication and respect from start to finish," In the Blood, director, Maryanne Arena said. "I am extremely proud of each and every one of our performers and crew members. Your heart will soar!"

Ed Hallborg is elated with the set design and expresses, "We're trying to introduce mixed media into this production. This play has several moments where the actors will 'break the fourth wall.' We plan on mixing traditional set-design and video to illustrate the themes of the playwright and director."

General admission ticket prices for In the Blood are $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for non-Genesee students, seniors (55+) and Genesee faculty and staff, and $3.00 for Genesee students with a valid GCC ID. New this year is a $2 discount for GCC Alumni with the new GCC Alumni Discount Card. (Available through the Alumni Affairs office, located in Conable Technology Building.)

In the Blood is also a haunting prelude to the upcoming event entitled the "Batavia-Bayou Cross Cultural Connection" occurring on Saturday, February 19 wherein Genesee Community College will host a multimedia event exploring Louisiana's struggle to rebound from Katrina and the BP Oil Spill disaster.
