WILKES-BARRE, PA (08/07/2018) The Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Wilkes University is hosting non-credit creative writing community workshops beginning in October. All workshops are open to adults and will be held on the Wilkes campus.

The cost for each workshop series is $65. Advance registration is available through the university's Continued Learning website wilkes.augusoft.net and click on Creative Writing under "Browser." The workshops include:

Writing Our Environments

This workshop explores the complex relationships between people and place and how those relationships have broader emotional, historical and social impact on the self. It will help writers consider different approaches to writing about the self in rural and urban environments.

Workshops: Mondays, 6 to 8 p.m., Sept. 10, 17, 24; Oct. 1, 8 and 22

Generating from the Senses

With Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses as their guide, students will explore the common five senses, smell, touch, taste, hearing and vision. This workshop is meant to be generative in nature, enabling writers the option of composing in any genre they see fit for a given assignment. Students will need to purchase Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses.

Get Real! A Memoir Workshop

This workshop will help writers get started on a memoir. The workshop leader will help participants learn how to deal with writing sensitive material and stories that need to be told. The workshop will rely on writing prompts and the sharing of works.

Jazz Poetry Workshop

This is workshop will be a combination of looking at the genre of jazz music as an eclectic way of being that permeates lifestyle, fashion, language, culture and poetry. Participants will craft jazz poems and critical skills to help write and listen to the music and poetry of the music.
