Three Genesee Students Honored for SUNY Excellence

BATAVIA, NY (04/28/2009)(readMedia)-- Genesee Community College is pleased to announce three students have been named 2009 recipients of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Jennifer Bryant (Batavia, NY), Danielle Collins (Wyoming, NY) and Kathryn Scarborough (South Alabama, NY) all received the honor at an awards ceremony in Albany on April 7, 2009.

The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created 12 years ago to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.

Jennifer Bryant is a Paralegal Studies major and is very active in the College community. A Batavia native, Jennifer manages to balance a busy college class schedule, campus activities, as well as being a mom to her two year old daughter, Paige, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Jennifer came to Genesee after spending four years in the military, with three of those years overseas. Jennifer serves as president of GCC's Alpha Iota Upsilon chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and has been named to the President's list for three consecutive semesters. Jennifer has been active in promoting green alternatives in the community while making both the community and students at the College aware of pressing health and political issues. She has been an active member in the College's Honors Program and school newspaper, as well as being nominated for the Coca-Cola All-USA Academic Team (see related story, Two Genesee Students Recognized on State and National Levels) and the International Scholar Laureate Program. After graduating from Genesee in May 2009, Jennifer plans on continuing her education to pursue a degree in Political Science or International Relations, and eventually attend law school.

Danielle Collins, a 2007 graduate of Pavilion High School, is in the Fashion Merchandising Management Program at Genesee. She is very active on campus and has been awarded many honors including President's List, Dean's List, Student of the Month and being inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Danielle is President of Genesee's chapter of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) and she has co-produced the 27th & 28th Annual Fashion Shows. She has helped to orient freshmen students in the Fashion Merchandising program and has made several "best practices" presentations. Danielle has even been asked to make off-campus presentations to students at BOCES because of her high level of professionalism and enthusiasm. Danielle, 19, a resident of Wyoming, NY is the daughter of Rick and Kim Collins. Danielle has a 3.85 GPA and plans on attending the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising in Manhattan following her course work at Genesee.

Kathryn Scarborough, 19, is a graduate from Oakfield-Alabama High School and holds a 3.73 GPA. Kathryn was driven to attend Genesee after she won the President's Scholarship which recognizes talented students with leadership potential. Majoring in Math/Science with a concentration in Chemistry, Kathryn plans to continue her education at Liberty University in Virginia after graduation in May of 2009. Eventually, her goal is to become a veterinarian. Kathryn, a native of South Alabama, is the daughter of Samuel and Julie Scarborough and has three sisters Sarah, Laurie and Hannah. Kathryn's involvement in the community ranges from her work with her 4-H club and the Indian Falls Crafty Crew, to serving as a World of Life Youth Leader at her local church. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) international honor society at Genesee, Christian Students United and was on the 2009 All-New York Academic team for PTK. In 2008, she has also received the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Award which included $1,000 reward to be applied to her education.

"The entire campus community is so proud of these young women," Virginia Taylor, Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services said. "Their academic accomplishments as well as their community involvement, really show the types of students that attend Genesee. They have set great examples for current and future students."

Jennifer, Danielle and Kathryn were among 238 students from 63 SUNY campuses recognized for their remarkable achievements. At the ceremony, they each received a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.
