ALLIANCE, OH (05/02/2011)(readMedia)-- Ohio Campus Compact (OCC) presented the 2010-2011 Charles J. Ping Student Service Award to Timothy Hatton for his contributions to community service during the annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation held Tuesday, April 19 on campus.

OCC is a non-profit membership organization of 47 Ohio colleges and universities that demonstrates strong community service, service learning or civic engagement on their campuses. The Ping Award was designed to recognize and honor undergraduate students' outstanding leadership and contributions to community service on their campus and within their community. This award is granted annually to undergraduates from Ohio Campus Compact member institutions who exhibit outstanding leadership in their community service endeavors both on their campus and within their community.

Hatton, a junior philosophy and political science major of Wooster, Ohio was nominated by Mount Union president Dr. Richard F. Giese for his ability to maintain a high academic standing while contributing many valuable service hours in several communities.

An active student on campus, Hatton is an advancement ambassador, community educator and member of Campus Crusade for Christ and the Dowling Mentor Program. He is also a former member of Student Senate, Sophomore Service Honorary and the M3C Fellowship Program. In addition, he has been regularly named to the Dean's List, and is a regular participant in Mount Union's alternative spring break program, having traveled for flood relief in Atlanta, Georgia and environmental restoration in Pensacola, Florida.

"Tim is truly the model of a civically engaged student," said Giese in his nomination letter. "Our mission at the University of Mount Union is to prepare students for fulfilling lives, meaningful work and responsible citizenship. Tim Hatton is evidence that we are achieving this mission."

According to the OCC, "candidates should show evidence of exemplary community service which reflects the student's efforts to meet needs in the community. In addition, the Ping award recognizes student efforts from individual commitment to the ability to involve others. OCC is especially interested in efforts that have connected service with academic study and long-term community support."

The award is granted annually to undergraduates from Ohio Campus Compact member institutions to students who exhibit leadership in their community and on their campus. This year, State Farm Insurance provided five legacy grants to student leaders.
