Today is National Voter Registration Day! Here's What To Know

Common Cause New York encourages all New Yorkers to take advantage of this opportunity to register before the October 26 deadline and make a plan to vote!

NEW YORK, NY (09/17/2024) (readMedia)-- Today is National Voter Registration Day! New Yorkers can register either online, in-person, or by mail until October 26th to be eligible to vote in the General Election on November 5th. For additional details about important election and voting deadlines, visit the State Board of Elections website. Any voters who are unsure of whether they are already registered can check their registration status online here.

"Today is a great reminder to make sure you are registered and ready to vote this election season," said Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause New York. "We encourage every New Yorker to make their voice heard, whether in-person or by mail, and familiarize themselves with their rights before Election Day."

Early Voting begins on Saturday, October 26th and ends on Sunday, November 3rd. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. In addition to the Presidential Election, New Yorkers will cast their vote for different state and local races depending on where they are registered. All New Yorkers will be asked to vote on a ballot proposal to affirm or deny the Equal Protection of Law Amendment, which would protect the right to abortion and ban discrimination based on identity.

To combat misinformation about our elections, the New York State Board of Elections will continue to share important updates about upcoming deadlines and accurate information about how our elections are safe and secure. To keep up with the latest, most factual information, New Yorkers should check the New York State Board of Elections social channels and follow on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram and YouTube for the most timely updates. New York City residents can get up to date election information from the New York City Board of Elections at www.vote.nyc and by following the NYC Board on X (formerly Twitter).

Common Cause/NY also encourages all New Yorkers to familiarize themselves with their rights before Election Day, and to report any misconduct they see to 886-OUR-VOTE, a national election protection hotline. Here's what to know:

  • Trusted election officials verify each ballot to ensure that every vote is counted. Our election system is safe and secure and follows the law.
  • Voters can expect to know the final results in the weeks following Election Day. Election night results will include all ballots cast on Election Day and during early voting, as well as valid absentee and vote by mail ballots that have been received throughout early voting. However, election night results are not complete. The deadline for receipt of absentee and vote by mail ballots postmarked no later than November 5th is Tuesday, November 12th. These ballots will continue to be counted as they are received.
  • When in doubt, call 1-866-OURVOTE: a free hotline of legal personnel can talk you through it. Spanish, Arabic and Asian languages support are also available via the Election Protection website.
