BURLINGTON, VT (06/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Tolland resident Ariel Commins, who graduated from the University of Vermont this year with a major in secondary English education, is the 2010 recipient of The Elmer Nicholson Achievement Prize. The award recognizes a student for whom "emergence" is an overriding characteristic.
Commins, who also completed a special education minor in the College of Education and Social Services, was involved in a wide array of campus organizations and programs. She served on the Deans of Students Advisory Board, the planning committees for the Translating Identities Conference and the Conference on Leadership Development, the Academic Integrity Council, and served as a Discovery UVM host and as a resident advisor for three years. Commins has been involved with the Davis Center student staff, the Learning Co-op, Alternative Winter Break, Students for Peace and Global Justice, Free2BE, and Alianza Latina.
The award was announced at the University of Vermont's 206th Commencement ceremonies on May 23, where some 2,411 students were awarded a variety of bachelor's degrees, an estimated 514 advanced degrees and certificates were awarded by the UVM Graduate College and approximately 102 women and men took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees.
