Toms River High School Graduate Wins National Illustration Scholarship

PHILADELPHIA, PA (04/09/2012)(readMedia)-- The Society of Illustrators' 2012 Student Scholarship Competition honored University of the Arts junior and Toms River High School East graduate Samantha Schechter '13 with a $4000 scholarship for her  illustration, "The Haunted Hallway."

Nine of Schecter's University of the Arts classmates were also finalists in its annual nationwide exhibition and competition. Work by Schechter and her classmates will be on display at the Museum of American Illustration in New York from May 9 to June 2.

A jury of professional peers including illustrators and art directors choose the most outstanding works created throughout the year for recognition. Pieces are accepted based on the quality of technique, concept and skill of medium used. After reviewing 8,119 submissions, only 253 were selected for this year's exhibition.

The Society as well as various other generous private and corporate donors grant scholarships to the best students featured in the competition. The Museum of American Illustration in New York will display the students' original artwork as well as a full color catalog from May 9 through June 2, 2012. Awards and certificates will be given to the students during the opening reception on May 18, 2012.
