Top Tier Cakes Win State Fair Layer Cake Awards

DES MOINES, IA (09/04/2024) (readMedia)-- Bakers from across the state put their cakes to the test in the Cake Takes the Gold(ie's) competition judged Thursday, August 8, at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Brian Keul of West Des Moines won First Place Overall in the Layer Cake class. Ann Gillotti of Ankeny earned Second Place Overall and Meredith Willey of Norwalk earned Third Place Overall.

In the One-Layer Cakes and Cupcakes class, Ann Gillotti of Ankeny won First Place Overall. Mary Priske of Coralville claimed Second Place Overall and Amy Herold of Indianola earned Third Place Overall.

Ann Gillotti of Ankeny won the Sweepstakes award.

Marcia Miller of Des Moines won Reserve Sweepstakes honors.

Entries were judged on texture, appearance and flavor.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 140 divisions, 726 classes and over 6,400 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.

The Iowa State Fair is one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country and the single largest event in the state.
